THE IMPORTANCE OF ENERGY SOVEREIGNTY: D1.6 BILLION OWED BY NAWEC

45

No nation can do away with food and water. They are the key to human survival. A nation that depends on other nations for food and water cannot be sovereign. This is why self-reliance in the production of food and water is key to sovereign existence as a country.

This is why energy sovereignty which is linked to self-reliance in the provision of food and water are intricately linked. There is absolutely no doubt that the country should move towards energy sovereignty, otherwise energy dependency would lead to incalculable damages of the economy and the general well-being of the people.

The Minister of Energy and Petroleum has told the members of the National Assembly that because of slow down in cash flow Nawec owes Senelec and Karpower 1.6 billion dalasi for the provision of energy between June and August 2024.

This confirms that energy dependency is gradually emerging, requiring extraordinary measures to prevent a chronic state of affairs. Foroyaa strongly urges rethinking in the direction of promoting energy sovereignty and by extension sovereignty in the production of food and water to promote the general wellbeing of our nation.
