This paper is receiving information on the groundnut trade that is unsatisfactory and difficult to comprehend. Farmers are already complaining of the failure of the cropping season.
A cabinet paper affirming whether there is a crop failure or not is yet to be issued. The government however has received reports from the farming community that there is indication of a crop failure.
One would have thought this should have motivated the hastening of the purchase of the good crop before it finds itself in “lumos” (weekly markets) or exported out of desperation. Farmers are under pressure for cash and do fall victim to profiteers if there is no formal system that makes cash easily accessible and available to them.
This paper has witnessed seccos that are yet to be cleared and ready to purchase groundnuts and others that are ready, but are waiting for money to commence buying.
As we go to press, this paper received information that QMoney is available to Brifu to purchase groundnuts, but because the secco needed clearing, they are in the process of doing so in order to commence buying.
If there is to be transparency and clarity on this matter, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, the National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation (NFSPMC) (formerly GGC) and secco presidents throughout the country must be open to the media and give information that is concrete and clear. All those who are to deliver service should know that the role of the media is to hold service providers accountable to the service beneficiaries.
