THE EXECUTIVE AND LEGISLATURE ON THE SPOTLIGHT ON CONSTITUTIONAL MATTERS?

19

Information has been received of a public lecture by Halifa Sallah entitled “Ensuring Constitutional Change Before The 2026 Presidential Elections (An Inevitable Agenda)”.

Foroyaa finds this to be a curious topic, taking into consideration that the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill 2024, that should have gone through the second reading and either be passed for the first time or rejected for the second time, was delayed due to the application of the Attorney General for its consideration in the next session of the National Assembly, which takes place in June.

According to Halifa Sallah, he is to lay before the Gambian people, especially the executive and legislature, four options for constitutional change in The Gambia by 2026. The lecture is to take place from 8pm to 10 pm, on Friday, 23rd May, 2025 in collaboration with Eye Africa as the host with prominent Gambians in attendance.

Foroyaa will find out what is to be offered to the nation as options for constitutional change. The paper has tried to contact the office of Attorney General and Minister of Justice to find out what type of dialogue is taking place to ensure that the second reading ends up in a positive note. The feedback has been blank.

It appears that those who should decide the fate of The Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill 2024, are still not fully confident of what would happen when the Bill goes for the second reading. Indecision appears to be responsible for the stagnation on the Bill at this very moment. Will the public lecture provide a solution or not? That is the question to be answered after its delivery.

We have equally learnt that Halifa Sallah will give another public lecture on Africa Liberation Day, Sunday 25th May, at Nusrat Senior Secondary School from 3pm to 5pm in collaboration with the University of The Gambia Pan African Students Association.

Foroyaa is further informed that a public lecture on the Palestinian issue and its possible solution is to be delivered in the early part of June, 2025. Our readers should stay connected to receive mind stimulating information on key national, continental and international issues
