Countries are establishing proportional representation to promote youth and women participation in parliaments and councils.
In the Gambia, women and the youth who are employed by Government are not only required to go on unpaid leave for one year to stand for elections, the deposits have been increased to 50,000 for National Assembly Elections and 10,000 for council elections.
While most African governments are introducing term limits and are reducing percentage of votes earned to get back deposits to even 5 percent, no such reforms are taking place in the Gambia. There is also no sign that the Government is engaged in any form of political dialogue with the UN, AU, ECOWAS, EU, US or the opposition in the Gambia to promote any form of electoral reform for the better.
