THE BREAD CRISIS

96

The producers of bread are now selling a loaf at D10 instead of D7. A number of them have threatened that if they are forced by government to reduce the price to D7 they will close down their businesses.

The government is however telling the people that it will not allow the price of bread to move upwards.

For 56 years of independence the Gambian people have been eating bread without asking for the source. In a well organised society leaders must have foresight to plan ahead. It is absolutely irrefutable to say that we have the capacity to grow enough grains to feed any industry aimed at producing the flour the country needs. If we as a country were focused, we would have by now been producing enough grains for processing into flour and thus provide what the country needs to produce enough bread and other pastries. The task now is to put behind us the mistake of the past and forge ahead.
