The announcement by the government asking governors to remain neutral and impartial in the performance of their functions and to refrain from being partisan is a step in the right direction. For too long they have been abusing their authority by applying pressure on chiefs and alkalolu not only to become loyal to the ruling party but to go to all length to ensure that they secure the support of farmers and create hell for political opponents. They will effect the arrests of political opponents, deprive them of food aid that is meant for all and sundry and so on and so forth.
The people who have long desired change are now demanding for it. They want to be liberated from the clutches of rural tyranny.
Governors are supposed to be regional administrators coordinating the activities of government and should not be able to lord it over elected councils that should have a high degree of autonomy according to section 193 of the Constitution.
