A referee was forced to draw Banjul versus Brikama encounter to an abrupt close over the weekend after Brikama players here pictured impotently watching as the referee stopped the gamespectators hurled stones unto the pitch.

The game was six minutes shy of reaching its conclusion when agitated body of fans began to throw volley of invectives and stones at the referee identified as Marico.

Trouble stirred up when the referee overlooked Brikama’s appeal for a penalty. Banjul took on the counter with Omar Sarr outpacing his marker rifling past Brikama’s goalkeeper into the net.

Brikama players and officials, in a fit of rage, bitterly protested to the referee over the goal before the vexed crowd began throwing stones. And fearing for his safety, the referee abandoned the match heading for the dressing room. The incident at the Box Bar mini-stadium is the first of reported crowd violence to beset this year’s Super Nawettan.

It’s unclear whether a ban or fine will be imposed and Supernawettan Organising Committee (SOC) were yet to issue a ruling over the scenes of chaos that rocked Banjul-Brikama match.
