Dumping of solid waste at the Bakoteh Dumpsite which ceased some weeks ago has still not resumed.

The Kanifing Municipal Council has designated the Bakoteh Dumpsite as the place to dump solid waste in the Kanifing Municipality. However protest by the communities of Manjai and Bakoteh who insisted that dumping of solid waste at the dumpsite must cease led to the stoppage of dumping of solid waste at the dumpsite.

As it stands it is becoming a problem to control solid waste materials which can be seen littered around within the Kanifing Municipality. Many complain of the increasing amount of solid waste and the lack of its disposal. Communities in Bakoteh, Serekunda, Bundung, London and Dippakunda say they are increasingly finding it hard to dispose their waste materials. As a consequence many people are dumping their solid waste within the communities they are living, some dump their waste in abandoned compounds, others in ditches and yet others even on the road.

They lament the lack of progress in coming to any conclusion or solution to the crisis.

Speaking to Foroyaa, one Mustapha Camara, said they have stopped dumping their waste because they used to dump it at the dumpsite which is now fenced and closed. He said their waste is been piling up in the compound and they may soon be compelled to dump it on the road because they have nowhere else to dispose it.

Ebrima Dem from Dippa Kunda also made similar remarks and urged the KMC to say something about the dumping of waste materials as they are not even collected for disposal. “How can we live with waste materials in the compound”? He asked

The KMC Chief Executive Officer Mr Pakalifa Sayang informed this medium that the council and the community came to an agreement on the issue of the site, but those at the community level said that there is no agreement between the two sides.
