The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), in collaboration with its concessionaire, Alport, hosted a significant stakeholder engagement event on Wednesday, July 23 aimed at enhancing coordination and transparency in port operations.

The gathering brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, shipping companies, port workers, and community representatives, to discuss challenges and opportunities in the maritime sector.

The event, held at the Prime Atlantic Holtel in Banjul, featured presentations on the current state of port operations, ongoing projects, and future plans. GPA’s Managing Director, Ousman Jobarteh, emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in driving the efficiency and effectiveness of the port.

“We believe that an open dialogue with all parties involved is essential for improving our services and ensuring the port meets the growing demands of trade and commerce,” he stated.

Alport Banjul Mangaing Director Salih Levent Kaca echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the concessionaire’s commitment to investing in the port’s infrastructure.

“Our partnership with GPA is focused on ensuring the port adapts to the evolving needs of the maritime industry while prioritizing sustainability and security,” he remarked.

Key topics discussed during the event included the implementation of new technologies, enhancements to cargo handling processes, and the importance of training and capacity building for port workers. Stakeholders expressed optimism about ongoing projects, such as the expansion of terminal facilities and the introduction of digital systems aimed at streamlining operations.

Participants also raised concerns about the impacts of congestion and delays in port activities, stressing the need for collaborative solutions to enhance efficiency. In response, GPA and Alport representatives shared their commitment to addressing these issues through improved logistics strategies and increased collaboration with shipping lines.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing stakeholders to voice their opinions and suggestions. The GPA and Alport management expressed gratitude for the insights shared by participants, reinforcing their commitment to ongoing communication and partnership.

As The Gambia continues to position itself as a key player in regional trade, stakeholder engagement events like this are pivotal in fostering a cooperative environment for growth and development within the port sector.
