The Hon. Speaker of The National Assembly, Mariam Jack Denton, has called on deputies to fulfill the promises made to the electorate during their campaigns. She said politicians should invest in their elected parliamentarians at the National Assembly as investing in human capital is the key in politics.

The Hon. Speaker made these remarks at the induction training for National Assembly Members held at a local Hotel. The National Assembly Members are being trained on how to make good use of their legislative functions. She said Parliamentarians the world over are being challenged on the discharge of their duties.

“Your role as National Assembly Members is sometimes misunderstood, leading to lack of confidence in Parliamentarians and the Legislature, resulting in the high turnover of Members after every Parliamentary election,” she noted.

“The situation is so challenging that Parliamentarians the world over, are more often not sure of where, when and how to begin public sensitization on this highly demanding aspiring youth and intelligent public officials,’’ she said.

The Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Dodou Kebbeh, also added that this legislation is the best one so far involving very highly experienced National Assembly Members.
