Brikama Magistrate Court sentenced an accused security guard to pay a fine of D10,000, with a default of one year imprisonment, on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Magistrate I. O. Njie also ordered the accused to compensate the complainant D50,000, with the same default imprisonment term.
During the court hearing, the charge sheet was read to the accused, who pleaded guilty to stealing D50,000 from the complainant’s house.
Prosecutor Sgt. 442W M. J. Sallah presented the facts of the case, stating: “The complainant, Dembo Jabang, is an American-based Gambian who came on holiday to The Gambia. He hired two security guards from a security company. The accused was one of the guards deployed to the victim’s house. On April 3, 2025, Mr. Jabang left the guards at the house and travelled to Kartong for a mission around 1 p.m., without closing his house because the guards were at home. Upon his return around 3 p.m., he did not find the accused in the compound, and as soon as he entered his house, he realised that his money was taken and the accused was nowhere to be seen.”
The prosecutor added that the matter was reported to the Nyambai police station, and statements were recorded from witnesses. “A couple of days later, the accused was arrested and brought to Nyambai police post for a similar offence in a different location. He was confronted with the facts in this case, and he confessed to stealing D50,000 from the house of Dembo Jabang. He was then cautioned and charged for the offence committed, and he now stands trial before this court,” Sgt. Sallah said.
In his mitigation, the accused stated that he took the money because he wanted to travel to Europe by land, but he did not succeed.
Magistrate Njie sentenced the accused to a fine of D10,000 in default to serve one year imprisonment; and compensation of D50,000 to the complainant in default to serve one year imprisonment.
