Sandu District Livestock Owners Hold General Meeting in Sare Gubu

The Sandu District Livestock Owners Association has held its annual general meeting over the weekend in Sare Gubu, bringing together members and key stakeholders to discuss livestock development and ways to prevent conflict within the sector.

Chairman of the association, Alhagie Jallow, said the group is committed to advancing livestock production in the district through collaboration and member support. He stressed that collective efforts are crucial in addressing challenges faced by livestock owners.

Women’s leader Kaddy Jawla, from Changali Langkady, praised the National Livestock Owners Association for its continued support but urged women to take farming and animal rearing seriously, highlighting the role livestock plays in improving both income and social standing. She added that peace and stability remain essential for any progress in the sector.

Representing the district chief, Alhagie Cham thanked the national body for its assistance, saying regional authorities stand ready to partner with livestock farmers in advancing development in the district and beyond.

The Police Commissioner in Upper River Region, Yerro Mballow, underlined the importance of security, particularly in tackling cattle rustling. He assured members of the police’s readiness to work closely with livestock owners to safeguard their herds.

President of the National Livestock Owners Association, Ebrima O. Jallow, commended the Sandu District association for convening the gathering and urged members to avoid conflicts that could undermine their efforts. He called on local authorities to help farmers protect grazing lands and cattle tracks, while also thanking the government for its ongoing support to the livestock sector.

The meeting concluded with participants expressing optimism that the collaboration between local and national stakeholders will strengthen the livestock industry and contribute to sustainable agricultural development in The Gambia.
