There is much talk about fighting corruption. However, unless earnings
in the public service could enable a person to earn income supportive
of middle income lives, the fight against corruption would be a losing
battle.This is why Foroyaa has started the programme of reviewing the
salaries of public servants, starting with those at the top. Let us
focus on regional governors.
There are five regional governors. The Governors are at grade12. They
earn approximately 81,000 dalasi per annum or less than 7,000 dalasi
per month.
This could not sustain a bag of rice and a kilo of meat a day for a
month at a price of 250 dalasi per kilo.
Survival with honesty is indeed a problem in the Gambia under the
current salary structures.
