By Mamadou Dem The case of Sait Matty Jaw, a lecturer at the University of TheSait Matty Jaw Gambia (UTG), was mentioned in chambers yesterday, 14 January, 2015, but did not proceed due to the absence of the state. When the case resumed yesterday for an NIA operative to testify in chambers, Lamin S. Camara appeared for the accused alongside Combeh Gaye-Corker while the state was not represented. The case, however, was further adjourned to 29th January 2015. Mr Jaw was arraigned along with Seth Yaw Kandeh, a Ghanaian, and Olufemi Erinle Titus, a Nigerian, on charges ranging from conspiracy, failure to register a business and two counts of disobedience to statutory duty. The accused persons in their first appearance in court denied all the charges and were subsequently remanded at State Central Prison, Mile II. However, in a subsequent appearance, the two West African nationals, Kandeh and Titus, changed their plea from not guilty to guilty on all the four counts and were accordingly sentenced to a fine of D50, 000 on each or in default to serve one year imprisonment on each but to run concurrently. The trial Magistrate further ordered that if the convicts failed to comply within one month, then they shall serve the custodial sentence. The convicts, however, were reported to have complied and have since returned to their respective countries.  ]]>
