The minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Habibatou Drammeh, said at the Mansa Kunda on Friday, 29th August that the new policy is not to recruit graduates of the Gambia College School of Education automatically, but to recruit them based on needs. The Minister was responding to a question raised by one of the teachers who graduated in 2024. The College graduate inquired when the 2024 batch of graduates will receive their appointment letters.
Lack of finance and teaching distribution were to blame for this. This policy is being implemented in the face of shortage of qualified teachers in public schools. This undermines the very much talked about objective of quality education. In short, there is no assurance of quality education, especially since teaching materials and teaching aids are lacking in many schools coupled with a slight shortage of teachers.
