The Qgroup Foundation has announced a significant expansion of its STEM scholarship program, doubling the number of annual beneficiaries from 10 to 20 students.

This brings the total number of students supported under the program to 50 within four years, thanks to a partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE).

Speaking at the scholarship award ceremony held on January 28, 2025, at the Qgroup head office on Kairaba Avenue, Isatou Jah, Executive Director of Qgroup, highlighted the program’s comprehensive benefits.

“Since 2022, we’ve sponsored 10 students annually, making a total of 30 students so far. This year, we’ve increased that number to 20. Our scholarship package covers full tuition for four years, provides recipients with a brand-new laptop, a MiFi device, and free internet access throughout their studies. Additionally, we offer mentorship, guidance, and opportunities for internships,” Jah explained.

The event marked the fourth batch of recipients of the prestigious Qgroup Foundation-MoBSE-UTG Scholarship Program, recognizing outstanding students excelling in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Dr. Habibatou Drammeh, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education; Louie Mendy, Permanent Secretary at MoBSE; members of the Qgroup Scholarship Committee, scholarship recipients and their families, and other stakeholders.
The Qgroup Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Qgroup of companies—encompassing QCell, QTV, QMoney, and more—has consistently contributed to national development since its formal partnership with MoBSE began in 2018. Through this collaboration, the foundation aims to advance education, healthcare, and community development.

Muhammed Jah, Chairman of the Qgroup, underscored the foundation’s commitment to sustainable development.

“Since our inception in 2016, we’ve supported initiatives in education, health, youth empowerment, and poverty alleviation. These include scholarships for students, medical support for surgeries, assistance to startups, and disaster relief,” he said.
Dr. Drammeh, the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, lauded the Qgroup for their transformative role in empowering Gambian youth.

“These scholarships not only recognize academic excellence but also ensure equity by prioritizing students in financial need. This milestone is a testament to the Qgroup’s vision and the ministry’s shared commitment to empowering our future leaders,” she remarked.

Dr. Drammeh extended her gratitude to the Qgroup for its significant contributions to The Gambia’s education sector and encouraged recipients to maintain excellence throughout their studies.
This year’s scholarship process saw 231 applicants, with 110 shortlisted for rigorous review before selecting the final 20 awardees—comprising 13 males and 7 females. The program also includes internships for the top three students pursuing Computer Science or Information Systems, equipping them with industry experience to enhance their career prospects.

Amadou Tijan Bah, a scholarship recipient, expressed gratitude on behalf of his peers. “This scholarship has turned my dream into reality. It has lifted the financial burden on my family and given me the opportunity to pursue higher education,” he said.
The Qgroup Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring and supporting scholars throughout their academic journey. “Our goal is to ensure that every recipient emerges as a well-equipped graduate ready to address the challenges facing our country,” Jah stated.

As the QCell slogan proudly declares, “Sunu Buss” (Our Own), the Qgroup Foundation continues to be a beacon of hope for Gambian students, driving the nation’s development through education and innovation.
