Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has promised the Gambia Women’s Federation Market located in Brusubi Phase Two that he will provide them with the requisite support.

It was reported that the said market was opened for operation in the early 2000s, but it is still struggling to attract buyers.

Visiting the market, President Barrow said he will support the federation for the market to be in full operation.

“This women’s market has always been a controversial market. Going there I was able to learn a lot, they educate me and now I have to sit down and discuss with my Finance Minister and others,” the president said.

”Government has to come in or else that market will not operate because they need a lot of things that they do not have capacity to do. We will go further to support them.”

Maria DaCousta, the interim President of the federation outlined that their main challenge is the market ground which is muddy and during the rainy season accessibility becomes a problem.

“When it rains, nobody can have access to the market,” she said

She lamented that the other challenges they are facing is the lack of  enough water supply; adding that the borehole they are using is small and there is no electricity in the market as well, lack of security and inadequate toilet facilities is also greatly affecting them.

According to Mrs DaCousta, they have been yearning for assistance since 2011 and she believes that since the President has had first-hand information on their challenges, they hope to get assistance.

President Barrow also visited SRN Steels Gambia Limited Factory, Malick Mendy Tailoring, Ida’s Idea, SA Sombilly Enterprise, SMG Dry Port, Nessim Trading and Gambia Milling Corporation.
