President Adama Barrow has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a tireless advocate for global peace and a moral voice whose legacy will continue to inspire generations. In an official statement issued by the State House on Tuesday, President Barrow extended his condolences to the global Catholic community and the people of the Vatican following the Pope’s passing on Easter Monday.
“The Gambia joins the global Catholic community and stands in solidarity with the people of the Vatican in mourning the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis,” the statement read. President Barrow lauded the pontiff’s enduring commitment to interfaith dialogue, social justice, and the defense of the marginalized, noting that his contributions transcended religious boundaries and touched millions around the world.
The statement described Pope Francis as a leader whose compassion and humility brought renewed relevance to the papacy in a time of deep global uncertainty and division. “His Holiness leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come,” President Barrow said.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to be elected pope. His election in 2013 marked a historic departure from centuries of European leadership of the Roman Catholic Church. Known for his simplicity, progressive views, and tireless advocacy for peace and the environment, Francis gained widespread admiration both within and outside the Church.
The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis died of a stroke at the age of 88, shortly after leading his final Easter services. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief from world leaders, religious figures, and ordinary believers across continents.
President Barrow’s message of condolence joins a chorus of international tributes reflecting on the Pope’s commitment to global harmony and human dignity. The Gambia, home to a small but vibrant Catholic community, has long maintained respectful interfaith relations, a value frequently echoed by Pope Francis during his pontificate.
The government’s statement concluded with a call for unity and compassion, urging all people to “honor Pope Francis’s life by continuing to promote peace, justice, and love in our communities and across nations.”
