Foroyaa has learnt that a staff of the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) in the person of Yaya Touray, fondly called Umpa, has lost his life in an accident that occurred at the ports on 22nd January, 2016.
This information was confirmed by the family of the late young man who died at the age of 32.
Mr. Jalamang Touray, the father of the deceased, speaking to this reporter yesterday at his residence in Fajikunda, explained that his son was an employee of the GPA and that his dead came as a result of an accident he had at his workplace. He said they do not exactly know how the accident occurred because as none of them was present. He said he lives in Canada and came to the Gambia purposely because of the incident.
The father of the deceased said they were told that the matter is now in the hands of the police who are investigating it. “Now we are waiting for them and we’ll only be able to how he died from the police and medical reports,” he said.
When asked whether GPA has contacted the family on the issue, he said he was told that the officials attended the burial as he did not arrive at the time. He, however, lamented that they have not been seen or heard from them since then and that no one came to attend both the 3 and 7 days charities.
A source indicated that the incident happened at night when a moving vehicle knocked him against a container and that the victim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Foroyaa will contact both the GPA management and the police on how the incident occurred and its outcome and report accordingly.
