Foroyaa was informed that during the weekend, youths in Tallinding attempted to stop the burial of the remains of an Ahmadiyyan.
Police spokesperson, Foday Conta said that the incident occurred on Saturday 6 May 2017, between 2pm to 5pm, when the Police in the Kanifing Municipality intervened and resolved a situation which would have led to a serious confrontation between the orthodox Muslims and Ahmadiyyans of Tallinding.
“The confrontation is as a result of the burial rites of the remains of an Ahmadiyyan man of Tallinding who died in his early 70s and was to be buried at the Tallinding Muslim Cemetery, but denied burial by the youth of Tallinding,” he said.
PRO Conta added that the Tallinding youths claimed that Ahmadiyyans are non-Muslims and therefore cannot be allowed access to bury their dead ones in a Muslim cemetery, which according to them is against Islamic principles.
“The Police through dialogue brokered relative peace between them and the body was finally buried.”
He further stated that the central Police command has invited all stakeholders in the conflict which includes orthodox Muslims and Ahmadiyyans of Tallinding, the Supreme Islamic Council and officers at the Police Headquarters in Banjul on Monday 8th May 2017, for further dialogue to clear misunderstandings between the two religious sects and secure a lasting solution.
In the meantime, he said the office of the inspector General of police urges the general public especially the two religious sets in Tallinding to maintain peace and be law abiding at all time.
The office of the IGP further warns the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
