Police Recover Body of Drowned Seaport Worker

The Gambia Police Force (GPF) have announced that they have responded to a tragic drowning incident at the New Wharf, Banjul. which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 16 November 2024 between 12 am and 12:30 am. The body was later recovered on the same day.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Essa Colley, a 25-year-old compliance officer with Global Tracking and Maritime Solutions (GTMS), fell into the sea when he attempted to urinate. The witnesses who were at the Wharf heard his cries for help, but they were unable to rescue him as he was swept away by strong waves. Personal items, including his helmet, shoes and clipboard, were recovered at the scene.

Cadet Inspector Manjang, the spokesperson of the GPF said after an extensive search by the marines, the body of the deceased surfaced at approximately 6 pm and was identified by his brother, Salifu Colley. 

The body was then retrieved and transported to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Manjang said the Gambia Police Force is extending its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Essa Colley during this difficult time.
