The Public Relations Officer of the Gambia Police Force, (GPF), Cadet Assistant Superintendent Modou Musa Sisawo, said detectives are currently investigating the death of a one-month-old baby girl in Wellingara, whose death is suspected to be linked to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
‘‘Preliminary findings indicate that the child was allegedly subjected to circumcision and later developed severe bleeding. She was rushed to Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival,’’ PRO Sisawo said.
He said two women who are alleged to be involved in the case, are in police custody as investigations continue. He said the dead body of the baby girl has been moved to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital mortuary in Banjul from Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital, for further examination and investigation.
