A team of detectives of the Gambia Police Force (GPF) are investigating the death of a newly born baby wrapped in a nylon bag behind a compound in Tujereng.

So far, the police spokesman said the suspect (mother of the new-born baby boy) is being detained. The 23-year-old (name withheld), a native of Tujereng, has confessed to secretly giving birth to the baby-boy on May 5, 2024, added the police.

“She wrapped the new-born in a nylon bag and left him by a fence in their compound. But luckily, some children saw her and alerted the authorities. Initially, she did not inform her mother due to fear and shame, but she is now assisting investigators to uncover the truth,’’ explained Cadet ASP Modou Musa Sisawo – the public relation officer of the police.

He further said: “Our investigators did the needful along with the medical officers. We learned the baby is three months old. The body began composing, but the team were able to do the needful.’’

When asked whether charges were pressed against the suspect, PRO Sisawo couldn’t make further comment as he was in meeting – but promised to update this paper.
