The Gambia Police Force, in a recent update regarding the fatal accident that happened in Kafuta during the weekend, indicated that the number of confirmed deaths has increased to four.
This happened when a truck ran into a jubilant crowd on Saturday, 4 January 2025, following the end of a football match in Kafuta, causing multiple injuries and fractures to the victims.
Immediately after the accident, the police reported that all the injured were transported to Brikama health centre for immediate medical attention and that further referrals of critical cases were made to Ndemban Clinic in Bakau.
The Police also confirmed the involvement of forty-four individuals in the accident with one fatality confirmed, while forty-three others sustained injuries of various degrees. Many injured have been referred to Ndemban Clinic for further medical attention.
Meanwhile, the PRO of the Gambia Police Force, Cadet Assistant Superintendent Modou Musa Sisawo, said the Police are investigating the incident’s circumstances and will ensure appropriate legal action is taken against the culprit.
“Several victims have been treated and discharged at the Brikama Health Centre, while twenty others remain admitted at Ndemban Clinic. Sadly, the number of confirmed fatalities has increased to four, after our last update,” the Police reported.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, a 30-year-old male is in police custody, and PRO Sisawo said investigations are ongoing to ensure that justice is served.
