Police Arrest Former Soldier on Suspicion of Robbery

The Gambia Police Force have arrested one Ismaila Faye allegedly linked to the robbery of a money exchange bureau in Farato Bojang Kunda. The alleged incident happened on Tuesday, 23 of April 2024.

Sources said the suspect, Ismaila Faye, is an ex-soldier who was working with the Gambia National Army and is a resident of Basori Village, Kombo East District – West Coast Region. The police could not confirm whether the man is an ex-soldier.

The incident was reported to the Farato Police Station on Wednesday, 17th of April 2024. The man allegedly took an amount of Seventy-Five Thousand, One Hundred and Twenty-Six Dalasi (D75,126).

Police Public Relations Officers (PRO) Assistant Superintendent Modou Musa Sisawo confirmed the story. 

PRO Sisawo said during the interrogation, the suspect confessed to the police that he carried out the act. He also led the police to his residence where Twenty-Eight Thousand, One Hundred and Six Dalasi (D28,106) was recovered. ASP Sisawo further explained that he (the suspect) admitted to spending a significant amount of the stolen money on construction materials, including in the purchase of cement, sand and gravel.

The Police further searched the accused person house and recovered the knife he allegedly used in the robbery. They also recovered two (2) mobile phones belonging to the victim of the robbery.

The suspect has been charged and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
