Ousainou Darboe has officially secured the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) nomination for the 2026 presidential election, following a primary vote in which he reportedly received overwhelming endorsement by the party members. The primary, held on Wednesday, September 9, 2025, involved three shortlisted candidates—Darboe, Borry Touray, and Amadou Sanneh—selected from an initial pool of ten contenders.

The outcome was widely anticipated, with many party members predicting Darboe’s victory. Following the announcement, Darboe urged party supporters to unite and focus on purpose-driven action, calling on the youth wing to maintain discipline and respect for party leadership. “Well, UDP belong to all the party members and it is party that believes in democratic principles and values,” he said, emphasizing the importance of cohesion and responsible engagement on social media.

Darboe encouraged members to campaign peacefully, uphold democratic values, and take active steps against corruption. He also stressed that social media should be used constructively rather than for spreading misinformation or insulting others.

Chairperson of the UDP selection committee, Agi Yamudum Yarboe, highlighted that the voting process reflected the party’s democratic principles and affirmed the need for a flag bearer who would strengthen party integrity. “We are ready to win the upcoming election and we urged all militants to rally behind the flag bearer,” she said.

Mr. Yankuba Darboe, Chairperson of Brikama Area Council, praised Ousainou Darboe as the candidate best suited to lead the party and deliver change for Gambians. “Voting for Barrow and NPP means the same thing will happen and nothing can be achievable under Barrow,” he said, calling on citizens to unite behind Darboe for the betterment of the country.
