The Council of Ministers of The Gambia River Basin Organization Project (OMVG) met in Banjul for the 50th Ordinary Session of the Council on Tuesday.
The delegations are ministers from the Gambia, Senegal, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. They are meeting to consider the 2024 Activity Report, the 2025 Work Programme, and the related Budget.
The Council will also hold an extraordinary session in preparation for the ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of OMVG.
Gambia Minister of Environment Rohey John Manjang said the session is important because there is an urgent need to combat climate change as the sub-region faces increasing climate-related disasters like floods.
OMVG engages in energy outsourcing in the sub-region, natural resource management, water supply projects, agriculture, and environmental projects.
According to Minister Rohey, the projects enhance energy and increase food security in the sub-region. She added that Gambia is lucky to tap resources from OMVG member states.
She said the OMVG infrastructure is almost completed. She added that the Gambia is committed to the project because the infrastructure is good for local use.
“We are looking forward to leveraging the infrastructure for our use,’ she added.
Chairman of the OMVG Council of Ministers cum Minister of Natural Resources of Guinea-Bissau Malam Sambu said solidarity among member states is important for OMVG projects.
He further highlighted that solidarity is important for development in the sub-region, adding they need to discuss ideas and discuss projects. He urged them to remain united in their pursuit of development in the sub-region.
