Like many International Olympic Committee affiliates, Gambia will
today celebrate Olympic Day.
The occasion, which is globally observed, will this year enter its 66th edition.
The day has been a firm pillar of the Olympic Movement and is the
biggest Mass Sports around the world to commemorate the founding of
the modern Olympic Movement (IOC) by Pierre De Coubertin (1863-1937).Olympic Day is a celebration for youth around the World to observe the
Olympic Values of Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship.
In the Gambia, the National Olympic Committee (GNOC), will today
commemorate the event in the form of a 3 and 5km road race for
children from Schools around the Greater Banjul Area (GBA).
Over 1000 participants are expected to take part in the celebration to
be held at OlympAfrica Center at Serekunda East Mini Stadium starting
at 08:30am.
The Gambia IOC Member and first Vice President of GNOC, Mrs Beatrice
Allen, will deliver the message from IOC President Thomas Bach at the
celebration.
The celebration will also be graced by GNOC officials, National Sports
Council (NSC), Presidents and Secretary Generals of all Sporting
Associations, teachers, parents and students of various schools will
also attend to give support to their athletes.
Participants are expected to be given certificates at the end of the event.
