By Sailu Bah and Ousman Sillah The Central Bank of the Gambia (CBG) has introduced new bank notes inDalasi all the denominations with the image of President Yahya Jammeh on them. This announcement was made on Wednesday, 25 February 2015 revealing that the new bank notes are now in circulation. The news also added that the existing bank notes will continue to be legal tender and in circulation until fully withdrawn overtime. This is the third time that Gambia has been introduced a new currency with different features since the attainment of political independence from British colonial rule. The first currency change was with the introduction of the Dalasi and Butut on the 24 April 1970 to replace the British Pound and Pence when the Gambia attained a republican status and full sovereignty. This currency had the image of the then President Dawda Jawara. After the military coup d’etat of the PPP regime by the AFPRC and later APRC, the features on the Dalasi and Butut currency were changed with the face of the former president Jawara removed and replaced by the images of a girl, boy, man, woman and old man for the 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 dalasi denominations. This new development marks the third change of the features on the Gambian currency which has the face of the current president in both the existing and new denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Dalasi notes. The new denominations are the 20 and 200 Dalasi notes.]]>
