The Director of the National Environment Agency (NEA), Dr. Dawda Badjie, has issued a strong warning against littering, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to enforcing anti-littering laws.
Dr. Badjie made this warning on Friday at the NEA headquarters in Kanifing during a ceremony where the agency donated assorted cleansing materials—including rakes, spades, shovels, wheelbarrows, and dustbins—to associations, organizations, communities, schools, and tertiary institutions. The donation aims to support upcoming Set-Setal exercises and broader environmental cleanliness efforts.
He expressed deep concern over the increasing waste littered across the country, stressing that while the NEA continues to provide cleaning tools, their impact remains limited due to improper use.
“We have handed over a lot of cleansing materials to institutions, councils, and individuals, yet our country is still filled with litter. We need more effort in cleaning our environment,” he stated.
Dr. Badjie questioned the whereabouts of previously donated tools, highlighting that nearly 20 applicants had requested materials, but many communities failed to utilize them effectively. “Getting the tools is one thing, but using them as expected is another,” he lamented.
He also warned against the misuse of donated items for construction purposes, urging recipients to ensure sustainability by lending them to others when necessary. Schools that received dustbins were advised to educate students on proper waste disposal.
Muhammeh Jallon Jabang, head of the UPOPs project at NEA, urged beneficiaries to take proper care of the donated materials and use them effectively to maintain clean surroundings.
