National Assembly Endorses Appointments of Victims Reparation Commission

The National Assembly on Thursday, 19 December 2024, approved appointments to the Victims Reparation Commission.

The August body made the approval following the tabling of the Bill before the assembly by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dawda A. Jallow, seeking parliamentary approval for the said appointments.

The matter was referred to the Public Appointments Standing Committee, for scrutiny, and reports its findings back to the plenary for final approval.

Tabling the report of the Appointments Committee, the Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Sulayman Jammeh, National Assembly Member for Bundungka Kunda Constituency,said that in choosing the qualified members to the committees, the Committee based its thorough selection on the report of the selection committee panel, the victims’ Reparation Act 2024 and the Curriculum Vitae of the potential candidates.

As mandated by section 12 of the Victims Reparation Act, he said guidelines include two victim representatives, two youth representatives, and one person from a disability organization, n a chairperson, who is required to have a Bachelor’s Degree and at least 10 years of work experience, and that at least three members of the commission must be women.

The committee, in its consideration and thorough scrutiny of the candidates, recommended to be representatives of victims has selected Isatou Jammeh alias “Aisha Jammeh” and Dr. Badara Loum, as the duo are qualified personalities, with vast experience on issues relating to social work and pain of victims.

The committee recommended to the assembly that the following people in accordance with the Victims Reparation Act, and having reviewed the report of the Selection Panel approved the appointment for the following persons.

These persons include Dr. Badara Loum as Chairperson;

Mrs. Isatou Ndow as Vice Chairperson and a representative of the disabled organization;

The parliament subsequently adopted the report of the Public Appointments Committee of the National Assembly, as persons of the commissioner of the Victims Reparation Commission.

The Justice Minister hailed both the Legislature and Committee for the assignment well executed to appoint the said personalities to the Victims Reparation Commission.

He said: “Hopefully, they will soon assume office and victims will start seeing actions from the side of the government to take care of their needs.”
