The members of the Public Accounts Committee/Public Enterprise Committee (PAC/PEC) adopted the Audited and Financial Report of the National Agency for Legal Aid (NALA), on Monday 18 April 2016.
The report was presented by Justice Awa Bah last week which was scrutinised by NAMs and later adopted. In presenting the report Justice Awa Bah highlighted the activities of the agency, which included giving legal advice to the Gambian people, capacity building of court members, monitoring and assessment of legal aid services among many other issues.
“In the period 2010/2011 NALA provided legal representation to 53 cases; 129 cases in 2012/2013 and 83 cases in 2014. This performance should not be considered negligible by any stretch of the imagination,” she noted.
In highlighting some of the challenges, Justice Bah disclosed that in 2014 Nala had only three lawyers. She also revealed that their resources are meagre, with unfavourable logistics such as unavailability of vehicles among many other challenges.
