Below is the full statement:

“The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine regrets to inform the public that, on 11 February 2025, the MRCG Workers’ Union commenced a sit-down strike.

We recognise our employees’ right to voice their opinions and have always encouraged dialogue. While we are currently working with the relevant stakeholders to find an amicable solution, we regret to inform the public that clinical services provided to the public in Fajara and Keneba will be suspended with effect from Thursday 13 February 2025.

A limited outpatient service will be available in Fajara and Keneba on Monday 17 February. The first 200 patients who present to the clinic in Fajara before 8 am and who already have appointments booked for the dates of 13-21 February will be seen. Please note that the ward will not be open and we recommend that patients present urgently to their nearest hospital or health centre.

We assure the public that we fully understand the impact this may have on the Gambian population. We will keep you informed on the situation and provide information on the resumption of services once it becomes available. Participants in current MRCG clinical studies who need medical care during this period should contact the study staff at their study sites, to arrange to be seen.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause our stakeholders and the communities we work with and serve.  Thank you for your understanding during this time.”
