The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, on Thursday December 19, 2024 resumed operations after suspending operations for three days. .
The Unit on December 14, 2024 issued a notice on its official page informing the public of the suspension of Clinical Services in Fajara and Keneba amid the MRCG Workers’ Union planned sit-down strike on 16 December 2024.
In an interview with Foroyaa, Modou Mbye, Chairperson of the MRCG confirmed the suspension of the strike after the intervention of the Minister of Health for all workers to resume work on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
This reporter visited the unit’s clinical service department, but observed that operations had not resumed at the department as of Wednesday. Staff were seen on campus, but the outpatient department was visibly empty.
In another update, the Unit’s Director, on Tuesday December 17, 2024 announced the resumption of clinical services on Thursday 19 and Friday 20th. The update however, said: “The Clinical Services Department will provide limited services on Thursday, 19th December and Friday, 20th December 2024.
According to the notice, patients with existing appointments between 16th and 20th December are welcome to attend the Fajara Gate Clinic between 7:00AM and 10:00AM.
“Thursday, 19th December: Only the first 125 patients will be seen. Friday, 20th December: Only the first 60 patients will be seen,” it said, adding: “Please note that no new patients can be attended to during this period.
Meanwhile, Foroyaa had written to the Management of the facility to request for an interview on the matter, but it is yet to respond.
