Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE) Lamin Dampha has informed Foroyaa that the migrant workers to Spain are expected to be purely farm workers.

He said they had a ‘successful’ meeting with the Spanish authorities on the conditions of the deal.

“They were here and we had a successful interface with them. We are now finalising certain things before we start the recruitment process. We are very advanced in negotiations, maybe in the next two weeks or so, we may finalise everything and share it with the public,” he said.

According to him, recruitment will be done throughout the country when it starts.

“What they want as of now is people who are going to work on the farms. One of their conditions is one has to have a family here and to be able to work on the farm. This is going to be real farm work.”

When asked about the Saudi Arabia labour agreement and if the first batch of workers had left, he said: “The recruitment agencies have gone far, although there are some issues and we are supposed to have a Zoom meeting with the Saudi authorities this week.”

He said some of the agencies encountered challenges in accessing the Saudi recruitment which he said they are expected to register to.

“Only three out of the five licensed recruitment agencies were able to get access to these sites. All the recruitment agencies combined had received over twenty thousand (20,000) applicants,” he said.
