Muhamadou Touray, a member of the United Nations International Commission on Human Rights has joined many Gambians to condemn the recent statement of President Adama Barrow towards Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party.
He called on Adama Barrow and all politicians to desist from making unwarranted political comments that may threaten the peace and stability of the country.
He called on the the president to focus on addressing the human rights of Gambians concerning education, health, housing, and livelihood which is deteriorating in the country.
He added that the statement failed to address the issues that citizens are waiting for resolution and provide the appropriate political stability to achieve reforms that citizens feel are useful.
‘The Gambian people do not need such statements. We need good infrastructure, housing for the citizens, a good medical system, advanced health, and a quality education whose outputs would keep pace with developments in the labor market, eliminating disguised unemployment, measuring work performance, supporting the encouragement of the entrepreneurial spirit, and providing housing,’ he said
He added that the president should focus on enhancing the human rights of the people, especially their economic and social rights, adding that the government should provide job opportunities to youth who admit a surge in irregular migration.
‘The Gambia needs political, economic, social, educational, health and housing reforms and improving citizens’ living standards.
‘The president must know that stability and national unity are something that should not be tampered with, and this is unacceptable, and the country’s safety valve is the cohesion of its people,’ he said.
