MEDIA BATTLE BETWEEN BAKERS’ ASSOCIATION AND MINISTRY OF TRADE: SETTLEMENT URGENT

15

The mind of the bakers’ association was already expressed when they announced their plan to increase the price of bread to D13 which is D2 less than what they had initially intended. The government also issued a press release indicating that the association has agreed to retain the price of D10 pending an agreement in what appears to be a price dispute between the association and the government.

The association however has stressed that the negotiation has to be done within limited time and has indicated that if there is no settlement, they will make sure that “there is a balance in the business.”

It is therefore uncertain how long the price will remain at D10. The public does not wish to be ambushed by a sudden shortage of bread in the market or rise in prices. The government should therefore show due diligence that before the end of this week, the negotiation will be concluded and bread consumers accordingly informed of the content of the agreement to put an end to the uncertainty.
