MARAKISSA INCIDENT: THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR, IGP AND HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MUST COOPERATE TO INVESTIGATE

80

What happened at Marakissa on 23rd May 2024 is not simply a law enforcement challenge. It is strange in every sense of the word. This paper cannot understand why what happened, happened. A simple arrest of a suspect without any weapons cannot possibly lead to a whole neighbourhood being traumatized by the very forces that should protect them.

It is important for the community to make sense of what happened and feel assured that the security apparatus of the state is established to protect them. It is also important for the image of the security forces as an instrument of community protection service is protected. This is why a tripartite investigation is important and decision taken to prevent any form of punishment of an accused person before guilt is either accepted or proven before a court of law. Those who are empowered to use necessary force must see themselves as a disciplined force who must never be provoked to break the law in enforcing the law. The law enforcer should never be a law breaker. That is the verdict of justice and it is incontrovertible.
