Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing from Forex Bureau, Sunrise Mobile Shop

A suspect has pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing from AMM Financial Bureau and Sunrise Mobile Shop.

The Police arraigned Amet Sarr for stealing from those two places. CCTV footage shared online by What’s On – Gambia allegedly showed Amet Sarr stealing a customer’s black bag at Sunrise Mobile Shop and fleeing the scene. He was reported to have returned to Westfield two days later, where he attempted to steal money from AMM Financial Bureau. A female staff member saw him attempting to flee the scene and confronted him by wrestling him down, leading to his arrest. The victim of the Sunrise theft incident identified him.

The police alleged that on the 15th of July 2024, at AMM Financial Bureau in Westfield, Amet Sarr stole the sum of eighty-five thousand dalasi (D85,000.00), which belonged to the bureau. On the 12th July 2024 at Sunrise GSM in Westfield, he allegedly stole a black bag containing a total of thirty-three thousand and three hundred dalasi (D33,300), one hundred and fifty Euros (£150), one hundred dollars ($100), two hundred and fifty-five thousand CFA. He is alleged to have stolen a power bank valued at five thousand and five hundred dalasi (D5,500), and two flash drives worth five hundred dalasi (D500) each. 

The total value of the stolen items and money amounted to eighty-two thousand and nine hundred dalasi (D82,900).

Amet Sarr pleaded guilty to the two charges. Magistrate Touray recorded the guilty plea, but decided to suspend the sentence pending the narration of the facts.

The case was adjourned to Wednesday for the hearing of the facts and sentencing. The man was remanded at Mile 2 Prison.
