A man accused of stabbing another in the face has pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced by the Brikama Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Saikou Saidy, who was initially standing trial for assault causing actual bodily harm, changed his plea to guilty when the case resumed before Magistrate K.B. Sambou. The court accepted his plea and proceeded with sentencing.
Saidy was fined 5,000 dalasis or, in default, he would serve six months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to compensate the victim, Alkali Saidy, with 10,000 dalasis (D10,000.00) within two months, or face an additional one-year prison term.
The charges stem from an incident on November 17, 2024, in Janbanjalley, West Coast Region, where Saidy allegedly stabbed the victim on the right cheek with a knife. He was charged under Section 228 of the Criminal Code, Cap 20:01, Vol. III, Laws of The Gambia (2009).
The case was prosecuted by Police Sergeant 4422 Modou Jebel Sallah and Cadet ASP Saikou Touray on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
