A man from Gunjur village, Kombo South District, was dragged to court on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, facing charges of livestock theft.

Saikou Barrow, who appeared before Principal Magistrate A.O. Mendy at the Brikama Magistrates Court, is accused of stealing four goats, a donkey, and a ram belonging to Isatou Jarju.

Barrow, who appeared without legal representation, pleaded not guilty to the two charges. Prosecutor E. Fofana, representing the Inspector General of Police, outlined the charges in court. The first charge, cattle stealing, alleges that on December 17, 2024, Barrow stole four goats valued at 25,000 dalasi (approximately $500), from the property of Jarju. Under Section 255 of The Gambia’s Criminal Code, Barrow faces significant penalties if convicted.

The second charge involves suspected stolen property. Barrow is accused of being found in possession of a donkey and a ram in his compound in Gunjur, properties he could not account for. This charge, under Section 398A(1) of the Criminal Code, raises questions about the origin of the animals. After the charges were read, the prosecutor requested an adjournment for further proceedings. Magistrate Mendy granted the request, and the case has been scheduled for a hearing on April 7, 2025.
