A police sergeant said to be member of the Criminal Investigative Officer (CID) has allegedly beaten a man in Sare Ngai.

The alleged incident occurred on Saturday, 2nd December 2023 in Sare Ngai Village, Wulli West District in the Upper River Region (URR).

According to sources who witnessed the alleged incident, the CID officer, Sergeant Modou Njie of the Sare Ngai Police Station, came with two police officers and beat Alim Jallow in his own compound.

Foday Jallow, the Alkalo of Sare Ngai said the incident occurred on Saturday when the wife of the victim went to the police station to inform her alleged boyfriend (Sergeant Modou Njie) that her husband was accusing her of dating him.

The Alkalo said the police sergeant came with an immigration officer and one other man to arrest the man.

“The CID went to the man’s compound with some of his fellow security officer and a civilian man to arrest him. When the man (victim) tried to resist, they assaulted him and beat him mercilessly.

The Alkalo added: “If the Police in Basse down play the case, then we are ready to take it upon ourselves to follow due process in line with the law to see that justice is served. What the CID did is uncalled for.”

Alim Jallow (the victim) narrated that it was on Saturday morning when he was at his backyard when CID Modou Njie came to his compound with bicycle not knowing that he (the victim) was inside.

Alleged Victim Alim Jallow

“I heard him Njie the CID officer telling my wife that, I have been sending you messages for you to come and answer to me but you refuse. But if you don’t come before 1pm,  I will deal with you as I did to you before and he left,” Alim Jallow said.

“That was time I also came out and went to police station to report the matter, but when I reached the station I found that he (CID Njie) is the only one there then I proceeded to the Alkalo, where I reported the matter,” he said.

He said when he came back home he saw the aforementioned CID Njie with two other men. He added that the CID was the first to hit him and he fell on the floor. He explained that this was when the two men who accompanied the CID handcuffed him while the CID continued to beat him.

“I shouted for help and the people came and this was when they disappeared.  They left me with the handcuff then I went with the cuff to the compound of the Alkalo. I was escorted to the Basse Police Station by the Alkalo’s son where the cuff was removed from my hand,” victim explained.

The police PRO Modou Musa Sisawo confirmed that there has been an incident involving the CID officer.

He added that it was confirmed that a lady Gibba Sidebeh reported at Sare Ngai station that she was assaulted by the husband for seeing her talking to Njie. As a result Sgt Njie led a team to invite the complainant to the station but he refused the invitation which resulted to a push and pull which led to an alleged assault case against SGT. M. Njie of Sare Ngai C. I. U. All parties were  invited back to the station, and statements recorded from the complainant Alimu Jallow and the witnesses.

However, both SGT Njie and Gibba Sidebeh, the complainant’s wife denied they were dating.

Nonetheless the case is still under investigation, he concluded.
