Man Accused of Hacking His Wife with a Cutlass Denies Charges

Gorgie Sowe (Yugo Sowe), a man accused of cutting his wife by hacking her with a cutlass on various parts of her body on Tuesday, pleaded not guilty to all five charges proffered against him.

The charges were attempted murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm, intentional harm, wounding and domestic violence.

State Counsel A. Gibba appeared for the State while Senior Counsel O. Suso from the National Agency for Legal Aid appeared for the accused person.

Justice Jaiteh read the five counts to the accused person, which was translated in the Wollof language.

On count one, the defendant is charged with attempted murder. He is accused of trying to cause the death of his wife (name withheld) on the 16th of November 2023 in Brikama-Jalambang by hacking her with a cutlass, resulting in fatal injuries to her legs, arms, and other body parts

On count two, he is charged with grievous bodily harm. He is alleged to have harmed his wife on the same day and place by cutting her with a cutlass on various parts of her body.

On the third count, he is charged with Intentional harm. The accused person is said to have allegedly attempted to disfigure and disable his wife through using cutlass leading to fatal injuries on her body.

On the fourth count, the defendant is charged with Wounding, The accused person is said to have unlawfully inflicted wounds on his wife by cutting her with a cutlass on the 16th November 2023.

On the fifth and final count, the defendant is charged with Domestic Violence, He is accused of domestically violating his wife by hacking her with a cutlass, causing grievous harm on her body parts.

The accused pleaded not guilty to all the five counts against him. 

Counsel A. Gibba applied for the case to be adjourned to a shorter day to enable them bring their witness. Defence Counsel O. Susso did not object to the request.

Justice Jaiteh adjourned the case till 11th May 2024 at 11:30 am, 13th May 2024 at 12 pm, 20th May 2024 at 12 pm, 21st May 2024 at 12 pm, 27th May 2024 at 11 am, 28th May 2024 at 11 am, 3rd June 2024 at 11 am, 04th June 2024 at 11 am, 10th June 2024 at 10am and 11th June at 10 am for hearing of the case.
