MAMBURY NJIE DETAINED AT NIA FOR 36 DAYS

By Mustapha Jallow Mr. Mambury Njie, a former Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, whoMambury Njie was re-arrested by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has now spent 36 days  in detention. Mr. Njie was arrested by state security agents at his house in Brusubi on the 9 October, 2014, according to a close family source. The source noted that the family is allowed access to him at his place of detention at the NIA headquarters but that the reason (s) for his detention is (are) still not known to them, adding that they are appealing for his release by the authorities. However, when the NIA office in Banjul was contacted to enquire about the protracted detention of Mr. Njie, the official land phone kept ringing without any answer. The former Finance and Economic Affairs Minister was earlier acquitted and discharged on two counts of economic crime and neglect of official duty by Justice Mikailu Abdulahi of the Special Criminal Division (SCD) of the High court in Banjul on 3rd July 2014. Prior to his arraignment, Mr. Njie was re-arrested on 25 February 2014 and detained for a long period before his acquittal and discharge.  ]]>
