Principal Magistrate Sallah Mbai on Wednesday remanded Bakary Jawo accused of putting substance (drug) in the drinks of Aja Majula Hydara resulting in her untimely demise.

Aja Majula Hydara’s death was reported in the media. The information that spread online was that she died after consuming an unknown tablet at the Dunas Night Club in Senegambia.

The police arraigned Bakary Jawo for the alleged murder of Aja Majula Hydara, which allegedly occurred at Dunas Night Club. Police prosecutor Baba Jallow represented the Inspector General of Police (IGP). BakaryJawo was charged with Murder under section 187 of the Criminal Code.

The police alleged that on or about the 22nd of June 2024 at the Dunas Night Club Palma Rima, Bakary Jawo willfully and knowingly caused the death of one Aja Majula Hydara, a 26-year-old, by putting a (drug) substance in her water bottle which she drank causing her death.

Police prosecutor Sub-Inspector Kebbeh made an application for the case to be transferred to the Special Criminal Court because the offence is a capital offence that attracts the sentence of life imprisonment or death. He submitted that the magistrate court lacks jurisdiction.

He applied for the case to be transferred to the Special Criminal Division at the High Court and for the accused to be remanded at the Mile 2 Central prison. He relied on Legal Notice Number 3 of 2009 and sections 62 and 208A of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Principal Magistrate Sallah Mbai granted the application and transferred the case to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court. She noted that she lacked the power to try the case. She ordered for the accused person to be remanded at Mile 2 until his appearance before the high court.
