Local Government Commission of Inquiry Resumes Public Hearings

The Commission of Inquiry into the local government councils will commence public hearings today ,Monday, 15 January 2024.

The resumption followed the Christmas and New Year break. Work at the Commission’s Secretariat has been going throughout the period of the recess at Djembe Hotel.

The Local Government Commission of Inquiry was established to conduct a full and impartial investigation into the local government councils. The inquiry body was tasked to do a holistic and fair review of the financial and administrative operations of the councils to enhance transparency and accountability.

So far, the Commission has heard evidence from over 60 witnesses including Permanent Secretary, auditors, bankers, councils’ revenue collectors, procurement officers, and other senior officials of the councils.

Thus far, the Commission had concluded hearing on the Basse Area Council and it is currently focused on Mansakonko Area Council. It will proceed to hear other councils.
