Liberian Lawmakers Tasked to Unify their Nation

A delegation of the ECOWAS Parliament to Liberia has tasked members of the Liberian House of Representatives, to work towards unifying their people.

The delegation made this pronouncement, in a communique, issued after their mediation visit to Liberia, from the 14th to 16th of November 2024, with the ultimate aim of resolving the leadership impasse at the Liberian House of Representatives.

In the communique, the delegation expressed its concern which has necessitated the Head of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Governments to send a mediation delegation to Monrovia regarding the matter.

The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, was requested by President Tinubu to lead this parliamentary delegation on this diplomacy mission.

Upon arrival, the mission engaged the relevant authorities and institutions of Liberia to facilitate an amicable resolution between the parties concerned. The delegation visited the President of Liberia, H.E. Joseph N. Boakai  SR; Chief Justice Sie-A Nyene Gyapay Youh;  and the Speaker and Majority bloc of the House of Representatives of Liberia among other top officials in Monrovia.

The delegation in the communique expressed concern on the situation, saying it has paralyzed the legislative branch of the Liberian government and hindered the functioning of the government as a whole, causing genuine apprehension among the resilient people of Liberia.

The delegation challenged Members of the House of Reps. to consider the best interest of the Liberian people who have entrusted them with the responsibility of law-making, oversight, and representing their will and aspirations. The delegation called on Members of the House to work towards unifying their country and to keep it on the path of peace, development, and progress, expressing optimism about the willingness of the Members of the House of Representatives to find an honourable resolution on the impasse, in the best interest of the Liberian people, and the people of their communities.
