Lawyer Abdoulie Fatty, counsel for Momodou Sabally has on Thursday accused the Gambia Police Force of denying him the chance to see his client who is currently detained at the paramilitary headquarters in Kanifing.
Lawyer Fatty said he wanted to meet Sabally for a discussion, but the paramilitary personnel told him he needed to obtain clearance from the police headquarters in Banjul in order to see him.
“I have been at the PIU entrance for 45 minutes. I explained I came to see my client to brief him about the ongoing court process. PIU insists I must get clearance from Banjul. Essentially, I’m deprived from consulting with my client. I’m denied access,” the Lawyer Fatty stated.
He said he went to the Police Intervention Unit headquarters carrying a file containing court documents and explained to the officer that he came to show the document to his client (Momodou Sabally) regarding processes he filed before the high court and to brief him about the outcome.
“Mind you, I’m carrying a file containing court documents which I showed the PIU and that I needed to sit with my client and have a legal briefing. So that I can advise my client and take instructions from him,” Lawyer Fatty said.
He described the action of the police as a denial of his client’s fundamental right to free and fair hearing and access to justice.
