LAND FOR MEDIA HOUSES PROPOSED

During a session between the president of the republic and print media heads, The Point publisher and proprietor indicated that the company had since paid the D50,000 required to acquire state land as a policy established by the government but has not received any response. In the aftermath of the meeting, four media houses which publish daily were encouraged to apply and pay the D50,000 so that the state can consider providing land. This matter is under consideration by the four print media houses.

The readers should join the debate on how the state should empower the press to be sustainable and independent in providing reliable information to both the public and government in order to build a more informed country.

Foroyaa would entertain opinions on this matter as the press finds it difficult to rely only on sales to sustain production. Newspapers in the Gambia only cost D15. The reading culture is also small in scope. Sustainability is therefore a challenge in the face of increase in rent.
