The chaos and tension on Monday involving shop and canteen owners in the Serrekunda Market and street vendors in the vicinity once again raises the need for the Kanifing Municipal Council to consider the possibility of paving the way for street vendors to have access to shops, canteens and places to sell their products inside the market. This will in turn pave the way for street vendors in the vicinity, including Jobe Street, which has become a market, to be accessible to traffic and pedestrians.
Even after the Tobaski sale or ‘wanterr’ the established street vendors will continue. The council can consider dividing the market into sections and goods of the same category will be in the same section so that vendors of the same category will be equally accessible to buyers. This will encourage street vendors to accept moving into the market. The alternative for those who reject the offer is to relocate to a suitable place identified by the council. This will make it easier to clear vendors from the streets and make them accessible to traffic and pedestrians.
